FAQ – Cardiff Family Photo Shoot

I’m an outdoor photographer and I use natural light, so a location family photo session means that we choose an outdoor location together for your photo session. We go for something that suits your family – are you beachy? Do you like forest walks? I have a number of gorgeous local locations that I use on a regular basis, so there’s plenty for us to choose from.

My diary is constantly changing due to the lovely Welsh weather, so if you’d like to find out my availability, please drop me a line and I’ll get straight back to you.

Family Shoots

No. The packages are designed to help you get the most out of your photo session. You don’t need to choose one in advance. You can choose a package at the viewing session once you’ve seen all your images. We can work out together, which one suits your needs the best. The only thing you need to pay in advance is the session fee of £149.

Family shoots

This really depends on how many members of the family there are and what combinations we have done, but generally a full family session will lead to between 50-70 finished images.

Life sometimes throws us a curve ball and so I’m very used to rescheduling sessions. If the weather is bad or your child wakes up with a bug, it’s no problem at all to postpone. I normally get in touch a day or so before your session to confirm arrangements once I’ve checked the weather forecast. If you need to reschedule with me because of illness, then just let me know as soon as you can.

I’ve been a family photographer for over 16 years and it’s very rare for me to meet clients that are at ease in front of the camera. However, I’m super passionate about my job and I see it as capturing the love and relationships in families. It’s very easy for Mum and Dad to take a step back and just ask for the children to be photographed but, have a think about what your children might like to see when they are older. Do they just want to see pictures of themselves or do they want to see themselves being hugged, squeezed and cherished by their parents? I’ll just leave it at that….

OK, I won’t. Of course, I won’t force anyone in front of the camera. I’m very informal and friendly (honest) and just want to do the best job for you. You can decide how much involvement you’d like in the session and even if we only take a few family photos before concentrating on the children, I promise you, it’ll be worth it.

Please do not worry about your children’s behaviour at all. First of all, I have two of my own, so I know what it’s like trying to get them to do anything. Secondly, I’ve been doing this job for a long time and so I’ve pretty much seen it all. Thirdly, I’ve worked in a preschool (need I say more?). Family photo sessions are all about capturing your children as they are. Yes, it would be nice if they sat still for the odd moment, but I’m in no hurry at all and if they take a while to warm up (or calm down) then that’s fine by me. There’s no time limit on the session (it’s normally around 2 hours, as that is how long children can generally tolerate) but if it takes longer then it’s not a problem. There’s plenty of time to give them a snack and drink and to have a rest.

Family Session

I normally take around 2 weeks to process your images and prepare a slideshow. During that time, I’ll be in touch to arrange date for a viewing session. Viewing sessions take place at my home office and normally take around 1-2 hours. I’m very flexible, so we arrange a time to suit you.

At the viewing session, we watch a slideshow of images from your session and then you get to choose which ones you’d like to have printed.

I understand that booking a family photo session is a luxury and you want to make sure that your money is well spent. I work on a package basis, which means that all clients choose one of my available packages.

I’m very up front about my pricing. There are no hidden extras or added costs at all. You can see all my prices on my website and work out what the cost will be. A family photo session is an investment, for sure. You will spend time planning the shoot, working out your outfits, attending the photo shoot itself and the viewing session. You can then choose the best package for you. My most popular packages are the first and second options. Package 2 is very popular with families as they love all the images from their session and like to have the digital copies. This package also includes 10 gorgeous prints to ensure they go away with the whole session digitally AND they also have a selection of high quality prints too.

Prints normally take around a week to arrive. I’ll get in touch with you as soon as I have them and we can arrange collection or delivery to you.

If you have ordered a canvas or a frame, it may take a little longer. All my products are handmade at a professional photo lab. They normally take between 2-3 weeks. Again, I’ll be in touch to arrange collection or delivery with you as soon as they arrive.

Please get in touch with me, either via email – gemma@gemmagriffithsphotography.co.uk or through my contact page. Once we’ve made contact, I’ll arrange a time to give you a ring for a chat about everything and I can answer any questions you have and, if you like, book a date in the diary.

Yes! Don’t panic, you don’t need to be a fashionista to have a family photo session. I’m certainly not! It is important to think about what you’re all going to wear though. I always advise that you try and blend together. There’s no need for white t-shirts and jeans, but just make sure that your clothes look good together. If you lay things out on your bed and look at them as a whole, you should be able to see whether they look good or not.

Patterns and textured fabrics are all good, but avoid writing and pictures on clothes as they can be distracting. Also, try and avoid very bright colours like neons. The star of the image is you and not your top. ☺
