First Birthday Family Shoot South Wales

It was an honour to be asked to photograph these gorgeous little twin boys on their first birthday. What a way to remember the day that you turned one! It was a chilly start down at the beach but the sun soon came out to warm us up as we had a lovely walk around the coast and on the beach. By the end of the shoot one of the boys had had too much excitement and had to have a little nap - which gave me a great opportunity to get some shots of Mum and Dad together on their own.

Instead of just one set location,  I work with families by taking a walk and stopping here and there as we go. There's no set poses, just squeezing together and spending quality time. There's around 100 images to view from each session as there's more to life than looking at a camera and saying cheese - I want to capture all the love! Here's just a little selection of the images from this session.

If you fancy a family photo shoot for 2019 then drop me a line.

South Wales family photoshoot at the beach

I love so many things about this family photo shoot. Apart from the gorgeous location (one of my faves) we had the most stunning sunset - golden light everywhere! This family shoot took place on the glorious South Wales coast. You'd be forgiven for thinking that it was during the Summer but it was actually at the end of September. We had one of those clear warm evenings when all is right with the world. Our shoot didn't just take place on the beach, we spent some time exploring the area and walking on the cliff tops too.

When I'm working with a family, I like to go for a wander and let the kids run around and explore. I want to try and capture their everyday personalities and relationships so I'm not a big fan of just getting them to sit down and smile. Family sessions, for me, are a mixture of portrait and documentary shooting, building up a story of the family and capturing them in that moment.

I'm a massive fan of the beach and of the water and I just loved seeing the kids mesmerised by the waves at the start and end of this session. I feel the same way about the sea, so it was wonderful to watch them playing in the water and running away when the waves came. The tide was on it's way in and so by the end of the shoot, there was no beach left, just the rocks and the causeway, but that didn't stop us having a play in the water. Of course, there's the inevitable moment when someone falls over and gets wet, signalling the end of the shoot... can you guess who it was?

I really did try and narrow down the  choices for this blog post and have cut down the images to around half but as I love so many of them, I thought, 'What the hell! Leave them in'. So, here they are, enjoy.

Summer Family Beach Shoot, South Wales.

I love it when a family return regularly for photos. I've photographed and watched this lovely family grow over the years and it's a real honour to be able to document these moments for them. Now that their little one is on her feet and raring to go, there's no stopping her! The shoot took place at one of my favourite locations, Dunraven Gardens and Southerndown Beach. It's such a great location because you get two different backgrounds in one place. Beautiful gardens and a stunner of a beach.

One evening at the start of the Summer we met there and had good old wander up the hill, into the gardens, through the woods and back down the hill to the beach. Some of my favourite images from this session are the hand holding, laughing, nose poking ones. I love capturing families - the dynamic within each one is so unique and so special. You can see the love shining out of these pictures.

If you fancy a family photo shoot but are a bit scared - worried about being in front of the camera, or worried about the cost. Have a look at FAQ's page and see if there's some answers there for you. Or, check out my family portfolio and see if you like my style. There's no fancy clothes or stiff grins needed, just the love that you have for each other.

Reasons to book a family shoot with me (and why not to!)

A little bit about me...

I hate clothes shopping, I don't iron and I'm rubbish with make-up. My hair is prone to frizz (a lot) and I'm carrying a few extra pounds. I may look a little scruffy around the edges but I wear my heart on my sleeve.

I became a family photographer 12 years ago because after my daughter was born I suddenly realised that there was so much emotion in every single image I took of her, so much power in photography, and I wanted to share that experience with others. Perfect images for me aren't 'perfect'. I'm not bothered if there's a hair out of place or your top is wrinkled, I'm looking past the surface and trying to capture something much more important. I want to document your relationships - the love that you have for each other - the unique sibling bonds, the Mummy's boy or the Daddy's girl and the pure loving moments that happen within each family. I'm fascinated by the bonds between each member and the dynamic as a whole. I don't want anyone to 'say cheese' or feel stiff and uncomfortable, I just want to come and hang out with you for a couple of hours, go for a walk, have a chat and capture some of your authentic family magic.

Scabby knees and flyaway hair are most welcome as are big laughs and double chins.

I love this family shoot from earlier in the year. We had a good old wander around the gardens and ended up on the beach. The family dog came with us and took many opportunities to photo bomb when not needed and run away when required. We threw leaves in a pond, climbed castle walls, threw stones into the sea and generally had a bit of an adventure.

So, if you're worried about those few extra pounds, or what to wear - please don't. The photos that I want to take of you are about much more than what you look like, they are about who you are as a family.

If you love ironing and hate the thought of grass stains on your clothes or mud on your shoes then maybe I'm not the right photographer for you. If you want someone to capture the real authentic magic in your family then maybe I am....

South Wales Sunset Beach Photo Shoot

I adore the beach and the ocean and so a family photo shoot at Dunraven Bay in South Wales at sunset is pretty perfect! It's where I had my own family photo session a couple of years ago and where I've spent many a day sitting on the rocks or playing in the sea with my kids. I absolutely love the dramatic cliffs, the rocky walk down to the beach and the gorgeous cove shape of Dunraven Bay (or Southerndown as we call it!). It's a photographers dream.

I have to say, this is one of my favourite photo sessions of all time. When you have a beautiful Mum and 5, yes, 5, stunning children it's a win win situation. She literally looks like a mermaid. Honestly. The tide was high when we headed down to the beach and there was no sand to be seen. So, we clambered over the rocks to find a good spot to take some photos. The kids were jumping up, under and over the rocks like little mountain goats. I was still nursing my semi-broken toe from a previous shoot, so did my best to hobble after them all!

The sun was starting to set, so the pictures have the most beautiful golden glow (note to potential clients - book a shoot at golden hour!) and the beach was starting to empty out so we had it mostly to ourselves.

I wanted to capture some authentic natural images for this family. I wanted hair flying, wet clothes and big grins. There's something so joyful and magical about this set of images I've had to include nearly 100 of them to share with you - not even half of the images from the shoot but it was so hard to whittle them down.

If you'd like your family essence captured in an honest and relaxed way. Get in touch for a chat about a location photo session. You can find out more about my packages on my pricing page, or drop me a line with any questions.

In the meantime, take a look at these beauties.
