Winter beach family shoot

I love taking photos at the beach all year round. This winter beach family shoot, just after the snow fall in February, is gorgeous.

The shoot was booked as a surprise for Dad's birthday. The idea was to get some lovely pictures of the three children (plus puppy) together, to be printed on a canvas. I say 'children', even though the two eldest are officially adults because you're never too old to take part in a family shoot. Just because you're in your twenties, doesn't mean that your parents don't want to look at photos of you.

The shoot took place at my favourite local beach, Southerndown (Dunraven Bay). If you look closely in the background you can see a bit of snow left on the hillside. It was absolutely freezing but we managed a walk around the gardens and made it to the beach in time for the sunset.

It was super slippery and myself and youngest both fell over and had a nice coating of mud. I managed to hit both cameras on the floor as well as getting covered in mud in the car park before we'd even started! Not the first time I've fallen over on a shoot and I'm sure it won't be the last either!

But, it's all worth it to get a beautiful set of images.

Have a little nosey below to see what we got up to. At the end of the post, you'll see a 9 image collage - my most popular product. Putting 9 images together from a shoot is a great way to display your favourite images. Find out more about my products on my Products page.

Beach Shoot in South Wales

A mini beach shoot in South Wales to blow away the cobwebs.

My girl and I got struck down with a horrible virus on Boxing Day and spent 2 weeks on the sofa sniffing and coughing. Each day we'd say to each other 'we'll be better tomorrow' and each day we woke up feeling rough. On the Sunday before school started in January, we decided that it was time we left the house and got some fresh air. I grabbed my camera and we headed down to our favourite place - the beach.

The beach looks great all year round. I love the pale tones of the sea and sky in contrast with the dark rocks and sand. The whole scene looked like Winter but was soothing and calming to look at. The rock pools at the beach provided a gorgeous reflective surface.

I discovered that my welly boot had a hole in it after standing in the water but I suffered with one wet sock so I could capture these images. What a brave solider I am!

There's also loads of beach shoots to view on my blog. Or, you can follow me on Instagram and Facebook!

In the meantime, enjoy having a look at these images of my girl. Gem x

Pop-Up Portraits Sessions with Gemma Griffiths Photography

For the last few years I've been popping into local playgroups in places like Cowbridge, Llanblethian and Colwinston to photograph pre-schoolers and toddlers. I visit in the Spring and Autumn time and regularly see repeat clients over the years. This year, I realised that lots of the children that I used to photograph were now in full time school and weren't able to come to my pop-up sessions anymore. So, the after school pop-up session was born!

I thought it would be a lovely idea to offer the same 10 minute pop-up sessions to older children and I have run a couple of after school photo sessions this Summer. They were so popular that they both sold out within 24 hours and even though I had to reschedule one because of the rain, I had a waiting list of reserves to fill any places that had to be changed.

So, what is a 10 minute pop-up session? Well, it's not a family photo shoot. There just isn't enough time to arrange a family in such a short space of time, but in 10 minutes, there's plenty of time for some lovely sibling photos and individual portraits (sometimes Mum can sneak in for a few photos too!). There's no charge for the photo session and you get an online gallery with your images within a few days. You then have a week to choose which ones you'd like to order, as prints or digital files.

I've had some lovely feedback from clients about these shoots and feel like they're a great idea for families that like to update images of their children regularly but don't want a full family photo shoot.

"Thanks so much Gem! We love them, they actually made me cry a bit. You're so clever." Jo

"Thanks for the beautiful photos - you are so talented." Rhian

"Amazing work! Wow so many fantastic images it’s going to be difficult to choose! !" Kelly

"I love the pictures. Amazed what you can do in 10 minutes!!!" Alli

"The pictures are amazing, we found it really hard deciding which ones to have." Hayley

I'll be running at least 2 more pop-up sessions this year - one in the Autumn and one very special Christmas pop-up shoot too (there will be an up front charge for the Christmas shoots as spaces are very limited).

To find out when the sessions are going to be, make sure that you follow my Facebook page - I'll add them in the Events section once they are scheduled and also sign up to my newsletter (you might get advance warning of the dates on there). To sign up, go to my homepage and scroll down to the bottom and add your email address in the box.

I hope you're all having an awesome Summer!

Christmas Snow Sessions

What fun we had!! I loved shooting these magical snow sessions for Christmas this year. Here's just a few of the gorgeous images that were captured on the day. Thanks to all my lovely helpers. It takes a lot of people to work on a session like this, so I was very grateful for the extra pairs of hands (and glad they would take part payment in chocolate!).

There's loads of love, hugs and magic in these pictures and I'm glad I brought a tear or two to my clients eyes when they saw their slideshows. Next year, we'll do even more and make sure no one misses out. I might even remember to buy my own children a Christmas jumper in time (epic fail Mum!). Summer Family Photo Session

Sometimes the stars align and along comes a perfect shoot. Two beautiful girls - tick, gorgeous dresses - tick, bluebells - tick, blossom - tick, you get the idea! A perfect Summer family photo session.

Everything was as it should have been, even down to the slight breeze in the air. The girls were naturals in front of the camera and had a ball.

There were so many images from this Summer family photo session, I couldn't fit them into a blog post, so here's some of my favourites. The shoot was so fab I've ordered myself a large collage image as my new sample!

Keep up to date with all my latest shoots by following me on Instagram and Facebook.
