Beach photo shoot
Beach photo shoot.
Back in the depths of Winter I started to think about how I could incorporate my love of the beach into my client work. I've always had family shoots at the beach and wanted to encourage more families to enjoy spending time there as much as I do. So, I decided to offer 'Mini Beach Shoots'. I was totally overwhelmed with the response and all the slots sold out really quickly. This shoot was the first one and took place in April. We had such fun playing around on the beach and splashing in the waves.
There were three sisters and Mum and Dad too. We twirled around, threw rocks in the sea and jumped over the crashing waves. Wild hair was the order of the day - the best look for the beach in my opinion! I love the connection between the sisters. They had such different personalities but a great bond between them.
The beach is so different each time I go there. It's such an epic background for a family session and I love the wildness of the sea. The best thing is watching kids playing in the water - you can see the pure joy on their faces as the waves come in.

Family Beach Shoot
Family Beach Shoot
Back in 2006, I'd just started my photography business and I was booked by a family that lived in the same road as me in Cowbridge. I photographed them as a family with their newborn son. A few years later, they had a second son and they booked another family shoot at home. Since then I've photographed the family every few years and watched the children grow up.
We've had family shoots at home and family beach shoots over the years. This one was pretty special with a glorious sunset at the end. The boys are the same age as my children so it's always lovely to see how they've grown and hear about what they are up to. We chatted about previous shoots and the youngest said that he could remember me coming to their house when he was a toddler. Pretty impressive!
It's a real honour to have repeat clients like this. It's such a great experience to watched families grow together.

South Wales Sunset Photo Shoot
Check out this gorgeous South Wales sunset photo shoot! When I started photographing families 13 years ago, it was primarily families with young children. Over the years there seems to have been a shift in that pattern and now I'm getting lots of bookings with older children. Maybe it's because my children are growing up and I know lots of people with older children. Or maybe it's because families have started to realise it's never too late to capture the magic of their kids - no matter how old they are!
This shoot was booked to capture 3 cousins together and I managed to twist Mum's arm into joining in with the shoot and getting some family photos taken at the same time. I'm pretty sure she's pleased that I did and now they have a gorgeous selection of images of ALL of them before their eldest finishes school. I feel very passionately about encouraging parents to include themselves into the family photos. It's a shared history that is not complete without every member of the family being featured.
The beach at sunset it my favourite place to be and I'm very grateful that my clients agree. We had a spectacular sunset on this shoot - scroll down to see the amazing colours. We started off with a walk around the gardens and on the cliff tops. Then went down to the beach to watch the sunset. There was some hot chocolate too - nice one Mum!

Beach Shoot in South Wales
A mini beach shoot in South Wales to blow away the cobwebs.
My girl and I got struck down with a horrible virus on Boxing Day and spent 2 weeks on the sofa sniffing and coughing. Each day we'd say to each other 'we'll be better tomorrow' and each day we woke up feeling rough. On the Sunday before school started in January, we decided that it was time we left the house and got some fresh air. I grabbed my camera and we headed down to our favourite place - the beach.
The beach looks great all year round. I love the pale tones of the sea and sky in contrast with the dark rocks and sand. The whole scene looked like Winter but was soothing and calming to look at. The rock pools at the beach provided a gorgeous reflective surface.
I discovered that my welly boot had a hole in it after standing in the water but I suffered with one wet sock so I could capture these images. What a brave solider I am!

Family Photoshoot South Wales
I offer outdoor family photoshoots all over South Wales.
Brace yourselves, this little one is seriously cute! Her parents made the awesome decision to celebrate her turning one by having a family photo shoot. What a wonderful idea to capture this perfect moment in time! As a parent of older kids I know how fast time flies. I love it when parents want to document their time as a family as the years go by. One is a pretty big milestone - she's just getting on her feet and starting to become more independent. Soon, she'll be running, skipping and jumping but for now, she still needs to hold on to Mummy and Daddy.
Now that my daughter is nearly a teenager and my son is 10 next month I'm finding that they are both changing so quickly. It's still really important to me to capture my children through all of their stages. The little chubby legs have become skinny dancers legs, squashy tummies have become 6 packs, short hair has grown into long flowing locks, baby faces are now changed and wearing make-up. We no longer shop in children's clothes shops, we let them order adult sized meals and we don't worry that they won't be tall enough to go on rides or waterslides. For the first time last weekend, I sat in on a Saturday night worrying about the disco my daughter had gone to, how it was going and if she was having a good time - she waltzed in at 10pm, happy as larry in her new dress.
No more early wake ups, nappy changes and mashing food for me, but I know there's new experiences to come. I'm looking forward to shopping trips with my girl, watching her on stage performing, cheering her on when she tackles a sporting activity, spending day after day surfing with her in Cornwall in the Summer, planning her birthday party (and outfits!) and watching her relationship with her brother go from strength to strength. My boy, he's nearly 10 but he's still my baby. Sometimes I can't believe my eyes when I see how much he's grown (although he's still a shorty!). It seems like yesterday that I was tucking him up in his grobag and letting him have an afternoon nap. Now, I'm carting him all over the country to compete in gymnastics competitions and watching his beautiful dancing.
I started my photography business when my daughter was 5 months old and I've had the chance to capture each moment of my children's lives. We love looking at old photos and remembering experiences and holidays together and both of them really value having a house full of photos. There's so much more to come and I can't wait!
