My Young Photographers Workshops in 2017 went down really well! The idea came from being asked if I could provide training for friends children who were interested in photography. My beginners photography training course was a bit too technical for the younger age group, so I decided to start from scratch and create a workshop that was targeted to children aged 11-16. I wanted the workshop to be primarily interactive and practical, so they could learn on the spot and not have to listen to me waffling on too much.

The workshop starts with a presentation to chat about the creative side of photography. We discuss lighting, composition and then have a quiz (to check they’ve been listening!) – with chocolate prizes of course. Next, we head outside to put all the learning into practice. The course is run in Colwinston, which is a little village in the Vale of Glamorgan just outside Cowbridge. It’s a very safe environment, so it’s great to see the kids getting really creative and exploring the surrounding area. We use the village hall, gardens, field and park area, so there’s plenty of opportunity for them to be creative. They are given 10 tasks to complete and at the end of each task we get together to see what everyone has taken and learn from each other. I’ve had some fabulous students who have a great eye and come up with unique ideas straight away. It’s a really fun morning seeing and I love seeing all the results of them putting into practice what we’ve discussed.

There’s a private Facebook page available after the course where students can share their work and ask questions too so the learning can continue.
